How to look up words and practice pronouncing them

If you were to tap on "fjord," for example, you would see a likeness of Photo 1.

Then if you were to tap on "Define" on the superimposed bar, you would be able to hear "fjord" pronounced, as well as see a sketch of a woman's face as she pronounces the word. See Photo 2.

Plus, you would be given the opportunity to practice saying the word yourself, and your pronunciation would be checked. If correct, you would be told, Good Job! If incorrect, you would be given some tips to help say the word correctly.

Moreover, you can access unabridged dictionaries in English and other languages.

If you were to press on "fjord," then tap the three vertical dots on the horizontal menu and choose "Web search," you would instantly get such pictures as the one shown in Photo 3.

A look at Photo 4, shows that you can access the Web and see images, videos, news, and more.

By selecting any text with the blue "teardrops," so to speak, then tapping the three vertical dots on the horizontal menu, then tapping, "Read aloud," the text will turn yellow, get much larger, and it will be read out loud. This action is depicted in Photo 4 also.

To return to Totally Literate from the Web, tab the arrow on the bottom of your display once for every page you have visited.

A Sale No One Ignored
When wood dropped to $40 a cord, it was a price everyone could easily afford.
A horde of people came from every ward. Some ferried across a fjord. Others hopped aboard boats and oared. Everyone wanted as much as he could possibly hoard. However, woodsman McCord was able to accord each person just one cord.
Still, all thanked the Lord and sang a joyous chord.
Step One: Press down on the first word of the story until it's highlighted in blue, and a thump is felt. See Photo 5.
Step Two: Next, press the right "tear drop" and drag it down until the whole story is highlighted in blue. (You may have to release your finger from the screen momentarily, then put it back on and drag the text upward and the teardrop downward again in order to capture the whole story.) See Photo 6. (Note: If after selecting the story, the bar with Copy, Share, Select all is not visible, moving the blue area up or down ever so slightly should bring it back into sight.) See Photo 6.

Step Three: Tap the 3 vertical dots to the right of "Select all," then tap on "Translate" on the vertical popup menu that should appear superimposed on the story. See Photo 7.
Step Four: Now you can view the story in French. If you tap the three lineal dots just below "A Sale No One Ignored" on Photo 8, that will toggle your screen so that you can view the story in English.
Step Five: To view this story in a different language, tap on "French" (again on Photo 8) and make your selection from a long popup menu that will appear. See a truncated list in Photo 9.
Step Six: To hear the story, merely tap on the speaker icon.
Step Seven: To copy the translation so that you can paste it onto a Word document, tap the icon to the left of the speaker icon.

Read Aloud
To read aloud, press the first word of Story 289 above, tap the three vertical dots on the horizontal menu, then tap "read aloud" from the popup menu.

Notes on Read aloud:

To read aloud Story 1 below or any other document or webpage, all you need to do is press on the title or first word of the story until a thump is felt. Then from the horizontal menu that will appear, choose "Read aloud," as depicted in Photos 10 and 11 above.

As each word is read aloud, it will be highlighted in yellow on a blue line.

The navigation controls are accessible at the top of your screen. As a story is being read, however, the controls may drop out of sight. To make them reappear, slightly press downward on your display.)

Holding your phone horizontally will make the print larger as well as make the rhyming words stand out.

All the Pronunciation and Definition tools are available while in the reading mode. But before accessing them, you must pause "Read aloud."

When through reading, merely tap the "x" to the left of the voice controls on top of your screen.

When the option to translate is not visible, tap the three parallel bars on the bottom right of your display and choose Translate. That will make the option visible. This action is depicted in Photos 12, 13, and 14 below.

Self-Study and Teacher-Assisted Study
To get to the screen depicted as it is shown in Photo 15 below, we'll use ignore to illustrate. Please press on this word above in "A Sale No one Ignored," then tap the 3 vertical dots next to "Select all." Then, tap on "Translate," as depicted in that photo. Now you can hear the word in English and French. Should you want to hear it in a different language, all you need to do is tap on "French" then make a selection from the pop-out menu.

To get to a blank screen, merely tap the Google Translate app on your phone. Then you can practice inputting words or sentences in whichever language you want and, likewise, hearing them in any language you want. See Photos 16 and 17.

Google Translate can be used in several ways. The following are a few of them --

Students can use the mic to input words.

Students with a just a little typing ability can use the keyboard to input words.

Students can copy and paste whatever they have inputted onto a Word document.

Students who are studying a foreign language at school can use the app to turn in error-free homework.

Parents can use it to teach reading, spelling and other literacy skills.
