Classic Stories

Classic stories on our site are of two kinds. Six are short illustrated stories for beginning readers; and five are much longer works for students in eighth grade and above. The stories for beginning readers are simple and direct, while those for older students use satire and parody to reveal the follies and realities of politics and human nature.

The four other classic stories on our website are written by the following authors—

​

  • The Tale of Peter Rabbit: Written by Beatrix Potter in 1893 (first privately printed in 1901 and commercially published in 1902).

  • Little Red Riding Hood: A traditional European folk tale. The earliest published version was written by Charles Perrault in 1697, and a widely known version was published by the Brothers Grimm in 1812.

  • Alice's Adventures in Wonderland: Written by Lewis Carroll (Charles Lutwidge Dodgson) and published in 1865.

  • The Wonderful Wizard of Oz: Written by L. Frank Baum and published in 1900

“The Three Billy Goats Gruff” is a Norwegian fairy tale gathered from oral tradition by Peter Christen Asbjørnsen and Jørgen Moe in their Norske Folkeeventyr (1841–1844).

The Beginning

Once upon a time there lived three billy goats called Gruff. One day, they set off in search of some sweet, green grass. 


Very soon the goats came to a river. Across it lay a meadow with the greenest grass any of them had ever seen. Spanning the river was a wooden bridge. However, they would soon learn that under it lived a fierce and ugly troll. Anytime he heard hooves going trip - trap, trip - trap, across the bridge, he’d jump out and gobble up whoever it was trying to cross. ​

The three billy goats Gruff sensed the presence of the troll, and were very frightened. But still they longed to eat the sweet, green grass.
