Oxford Dictionaries and Encyclopedias

The example below comes from an Aesop fable. The image shows its opening paragraph, which is used here to demonstration purposes.

An example taken from "The Sheep and the Pig"

Aesop’s parables, which were written long before the advent of Jesus, have  been rewritten countless times. This rewrite of  “The Pig and the Sheep” along with the others are  the handiwork of Totally Literate.

One day a shepherd discovered a fat Pig wandering in the meadow where his Sheep were grazing. He quickly attempted to catch it. But the porker squealed the moment the Shepherd came towards it. And when the Shepherd laid hands on it, it squealed so loud you would have thought that the Pig was being butchered alive.

How these features work

  • Readers can explore several helpful tools using the opening paragraph of The Pig and the Sheep:

  • Click any word to open a small menu, then choose See in Sidebar to view definitions, background notes, and related information.

  • To translate any portion of the text, select the words or paragraph, right‑click, and choose Translate selection to…. Users can then click the language they want, and the browser will translate the selected text into that language.

  • Readers can also copy the paragraph and paste it into Google Translate to view the entire passage side by side with a choice of over two hundred foreign languages.
