Copilot
Copilot is an AI assistant built into Microsoft Edge on desktop and available as an app on smartphones. This page explains how Copilot works with the Totally Literate website and how to access it on different devices.
Copilot can help with reading, writing, translating, explaining, and organizing information. It can switch languages when needed, and these tools work basically the same way on desktop and on smartphones.
Desktops
On desktop computers, Copilot appears in the Microsoft Edge sidebar. If you don’t see the Copilot icon, you may be using a different browser. Copilot is part of Edge itself, not part of this website.
Here are some of the ways Copilot can help you while you read or explore the Totally Literate website:
1. Explain difficult ideas
Copilot can clarify confusing passages, break down complex ideas, and give age‑appropriate explanations of events, references, or themes anywhere on the TL Website.
2. Provide background knowledge
If the TL Website mentions history, science, culture, or real‑world topics, Copilot can give short, clear explanations to help you understand the context.
3. Build vocabulary
Copilot can define unfamiliar words, give examples, show how a word is used in a sentence, and offer simpler alternatives when needed.
4. Summarize sections of text
You can ask Copilot to summarize a paragraph, page, or topic so you can follow the main ideas without losing track.
5. Use many languages easily
Copilot can translate words or passages, switch languages smoothly, explain grammar differences, and help readers understand TL Website content in the language they prefer. This supports multilingual families, language learners, and anyone who reads in more than one language.
6. Check understanding
You can ask Copilot questions about TL Website content to confirm your understanding, explore ideas, or review key points.
7. Organize information
Copilot can help you list key ideas, outline sections, track topics, or create simple notes while you explore the TL Website.
You can ask Copilot AI almost anything about Totally Literate and it will likely give you a pretty thorough and accurate answer.
Its response shown on the right was generated by merely selecting "Totally Literate Website," shown on the next to the top line above, then, from the pop-up menu, choosing "Ask Copilot." The pop-up menu is shown below.

Smartphones
Copilot is available through the Copilot app. It does not appear inside the mobile browser. If you want to use Copilot while viewing the TL Website, install the Copilot app and then open it. Once the app is open, you can talk to Copilot naturally and ask for help in the ways that work best for you.
Speaking
-
To speak instead of typing, tap the microphone icon in the Copilot app then ask questions in English, Spanish, or many other languages.
Listening
-
To hear answers aloud in English or in another language, just ask Copilot.
Pronunciation
-
To pronounce a word correctly, merely ask Copilot to speak the word slowly or repeat it.
Note: on some mobile browsers, a small Sparkle icon appears at the bottom of the screen. Tapping it opens Copilot so you can ask questions about the TL Website.
