Literacy Tools
Totally Literate uses various tools which can be used independently or jointly with one another. Because each tool can translate English into a multitude of languages, collectively they are suitable for students worldwide. Moreover, because of the way our documents are crafted, these tools can be used by students of all ages and abilities.
📂 Microsoft Edge Browser
Although Chrome, Firefox, and Safari can be used with some of our documents, they do not provide a seamless interface with our website. Only Edge does that. Edge allows visitors to listen to our entire website in English and over 100 additional languages with a plug-in or an extension. For these reasons, Totally Literate has been designed to be used exclusively on the Edge Browser.
📖 Immersive Reader (Edge)
Available natively in Edge. It can read aloud in numerous languages. It also provides definitions and several reading aids which are helpful to beginners and foreign students.
📄 Adobe Reader
Adobe Reader can read text aloud. By design, definitions are not easily accessed in Adobe though clear instructions, not visible to children, are available to parents. A free version of Adobe is provided, enabling users to read aloud PDFs.
🌐 Microsoft Word
PDFs can be exported to Word and read aloud in scores of languages. On Word, documents have some remarkable features over and above those of the traditional Immersive Reader.
🌐 Google Translate (GT)
Google Translate can translate English into well over 200 languages and dialects. It shows English side by side with the translated language. The translation can be copied and pasted into a Word document. Approximately sixty percent of the translations can be read aloud.
🤖 Copilot
Unlike the other tools, Copilot is not just functional — it’s conversational. It can answer questions, explain concepts, provide examples, and guide learners through the site’s resources. It adapts to each user’s needs, whether clarifying a definition, brainstorming ideas, or offering encouragement.
