Non-Flag Languages:

46 languages

However, before the above languages can be read aloud, a couple things must be done. They are explained below.

Changing Speakers

Changing Speakers

Only after first reading some text aloud in a flag language will the "Voice options" appear. Once they do appear, you will be able to change the voice as well as translate text or the entire website. One procedure should not be done without doing the other. Changing the speaker should be done first. And it should be done in English.

Changing Speakers: Flag Languages

Flag Languages neither have to be translated nor their speaker changed --that is, initially. After using a non-flag language and you want to switch back to a flag language, you indeed will have to change the speaker. Once doing so, the speakers and the languages should then be in sync for all 9 flag languages.

Changing Speakers: Non-Flag Languages

Steps to change the speaker:

  1. The first time you change speakers, you should do so using English. Only English will provide a user box that can be checked to allow all future translations to be translated from English. Doing this is necessary because translations from any other language would likely be less than satisfactory.

  2. Locate "Voice options." They are on the same toolbar as "Voice controls."

  3. Click on "Voice options" and choose a speaker who speaks the language you intend to use next.

  4. Pick the corresponding language. See Steps One and Two directly below.

Translating Non-Flag Languages

Herewith are the steps to take:

Step One -- Start by using English. It is the only language to use to translate non-flag languages. However, if the box next to, "Always translate from English" has been checked, then it doesn't matter which language you use.

Step Two -- Now that the "Voice options" are present, you should change the T-T-S speaker to Lao (to follow along with this example). So, click "Voice Options." When you do, you'll see a user box like the one below:

Step Three -- In the box above under "Choose a voice," click the down caret. That will bring up a pop-up menu with all the speakers available to you.  Pick the Lao speaker as shown below:

Lao is selected in Voice options

Step Four-- Now that we have changed the speaker, we next can translate our selection. We do so by clicking the "Translate" icon, which is now located next to the "Read aloud" icon. Note the picture below of the Translate icon:

Step Five-- After clicking the "Translate" icon, click on the down-pointing caret opposite of English, then, from the list of languages that will appear, select Lao as shown below.

Step Six -- When Lao appears in the rectangular box where English had been, click "Translate."

Step Seven-- When through listening in Lao, you must go back to "Voice options" and change the T-T-S speaker to one who speaks the language you intend to use next, whether it be a flag or non-flag language. Elsewise you'll have the Lao speaker attempting to read English, Japanese, Indonesian, or whichever language you had chosen.

Learning Definitions

Learning Definitions

To learn the definition of any word, pause the narration and double left click on the word that interests you, then mouse over "Search" and expand the menu. Next, click "Define." This will bring up the definition and provide a speaker icon to hear the word pronounced. (Currently, this feature works with only a limited number of languages.) See the two pictures below:
