Reading Aloud 

Your phone can read any page of the Totally Literate website aloud. It can also translate pages into many languages. These features work in all major mobile browsers (Edge, Safari, Chrome, Samsung Internet, Firefox, etc.).

Reading Aloud on Mobile Devices

On all phones, the highlight used during reading aloud may look different from the desktop version. It may sit slightly above or below the text, or it may not fully cover the tops of letters. This is normal behavior on mobile devices and depends on the phone and browser.

 

Reading Aloud with Downloads

Most phones can read aloud the text on a webpage. However, downloaded files — such as PDFs — usually cannot be read aloud unless you open them in a special app that supports text‑to‑speech.

If your phone does not read a downloaded file aloud, this is normal. You can still read aloud the same content on the webpage version.

iPhone (Safari) To have the page read aloud:

  • Tap the AA icon in the address bar.

  • Choose Listen to Page.

  • Or enable Settings → Accessibility → Spoken Content → Speak Screen and swipe down with two fingers.

To translate the page:

  • Tap the AA icon.

  • Choose Translate to… and select a language.

Android (Chrome) To have a page read aloud:

  • Tap the ⋮ menu.

  • Choose Read Aloud (on many devices).

  • Or enable Settings → Accessibility → Select to Speak.

To translate the page:

  • Tap the ⋮ menu.

  • Choose Translate… and select a language.

Android (Samsung Internet) To have the page read aloud:

  • Tap the ≡ menu.

  • Choose Read aloud.

To translate the page:

  • Tap the ≡ menu.

  • Choose Translate.

Looking up vocabulary

Press and hold any word to open a small popup. You can:

  • look it up on the Web

  • ask Copilot for a definition

  • or explore related words

This works in every mobile browser.
