Anti-Illiteracy War College

Jungle Warfare

Our Mission

To provide parents and educators with the vital tools and strategies to support beginning readers through the perilous hazards of the literacy jungle. With years of experience in Jungle Warfare tactics—recently reinforced by Copilot's real-time analytical support—we apprize you of all the mental entanglements to be wary of.

Intro

The Briefings are written for parents, teachers, and other adults who want a deeper understanding of how children learn to read — and how Totally Literate supports that journey. You can explore any Briefing at your own pace.

There is no order you must follow, and nothing you need to prepare before reading. Each briefing gives you a simple way to understand what your children may be experiencing while learning to read. You don’t need to take notes or follow steps. In Briefing 1, for example, just read the passage and let your thoughts settle in. The more clearly you see what your children are facing, the easier it will become to support them calmly with your knowledge and wisdom.

Briefing 1: The Tiger in the Jungle

For a child who can’t yet read, the world can feel like a dense jungle. Everything is alive and moving, but nothing is clearly marked. Paths twist in unexpected directions, sounds come from everywhere at once, and even simple tasks feel like navigating vines and shadows. Most likely nothing is wrong with the child’s intellectual ability — he or she is just unable to see through a tangle of bush that has not yet opened.

Literacy is the moment the jungle begins to open. Landmarks appear. Patterns emerge. What once looked like tangled undergrowth becomes a trail. With each new skill, the jungle becomes less intimidating and more like a place they can explore with confidence.
