Non-Flag Languages on Desktops 

Translating and Reading Aloud

Step 1.

If we are not already using English, we must switch to it. That is, scroll to the American flag and click it.

Step 2. 

It is necessary to have read some text aloud in order to access "Voice options." So —

 

We must read some text, any text aloud.

 

Step 3. 

"Voice options" are now visible, and they're located to the right of "Voice controls." So —

 

We click on "Voice options.".

Step 4. 

Clicking "Voice options" will trigger the user box below to appear. Then —

 

We should click on the caret next to whichever voice is in the user box.

Step 5.

After clicking the caret in the photo above, a long list of languages will appear.

 

For our example, we'll choose "Afrikaans," which is spoken in South Africa.

Step 6. 

After clicking "Afrikaans," as we did above, a long list of TTS speakers will appear.

We'll pick Adri, one of two Afrikaans speakers.

​Please note that English always appears atop the list, followed by any languages recently used. All other languages appear in alphabetical order.

Step 7. 

After clicking on Adri, comes a crucial step — we must make the "Read out loud" icon disappear from the URL bar. 

To do so, we merely click it, that is the "Read out loud" icon.

Step 8.

Now that we've executed the above step, we can —

Click the Translate icon.

Step 9.

After clicking the Translate icon, the translate user box will appear. Being that "Afrikaans" is in the "Translate to" box, we must change it to English, hence —

 

We click on the blue Translate button.

Voila! We have now completed all the translation steps, the entire website has been translated into Afrikaans, and we are ready to read aloud any webpage in that language!

Please note, "English" after the American flag will have changed to "Engels." This signifies that the website has indeed been translated.

Returning to English / American Flag

Step I.

To change a Non-Flag Language back to English — 

We first click "Voice options" then change to an English speaker.

Step II.

​Once we have changed the TTS voice to an English speaker —

We merely click the "Read out loud" icon to make it disappear.

Step III.

​With the "Read out loud" icon gone from the URL bar —

We click the Translate icon.

 

 

Step IV.

​After clicking the Translate icon, the user box below will appear. So —

 

We put a check mark in the box next to "Always translate pages from English," then we click "Show original" opposite the blue button "Done."

 

Step V.

Having completed the previous step, the translate user box will appear. ​Being that "Afrikaans" is in the "Translate to" box, we must change it to English, hence —

 

We click on "Afrikaans.

 

​Step VI.

That will bring up a long list of languages from which —

 

We'll pick English.

Step VII.

After clicking on "English," the Translate user box below will appear.

Lastly, we click "Show orignal."

​Once the step above has been executed, the entire website will change to English.

 

Also, we can now read aloud any webpage in English, as well as any other Flag Language by merely clicking on its flag.
